Joel de Andrade, MD, MSc, PhD, is an intensive care physician and the State Transplant Coordinator at the Santa Catarina State Department of Health, a position he has held since 2005. 

He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine at the UFSC University Hospital. 

He holds a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences from UFSC and a PhD in Business Administration from the COPPEAD Graduate School of Business at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). 

In 2008, he completed the International Master’s Program in Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation and Transplantation offered by Spain’s National Transplant Organization (ONT). 

His main areas of expertise include brain death determination, communication in critical situations, intensive care medicine, and transplant coordination. 

He is a member of the Technical Committee on Brain Death of the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine and of the Strategic Advisory Group of the Brazilian National Transplant System. 

Since 2024, he has also served as Technical Lead for the General Coordination of the National Transplant System at the Brazilian Ministry of Health. In 2022, he received the 5th Espírito Público Award in the “People Who Transform” category.
