The Herrenhausen Schloss
Herrenhäuser Straße 5
30419 Hannover
The Herrenhausen Schloss (palace) stands at the heart of the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hannover, Germany, serving as the complex’s central architectural and historical focal point. For centuries, it functioned as the summer residence of the Guelph dynasty, symbolizing their power, prestige, and refined lifestyle. The original palace was destroyed during the Second World War, leaving a significant void in the structure and identity of the gardens. This absence lasted for decades, until a major reconstruction project was undertaken between 2009 and 2013 by the City of Hannover and the Volkswagen Foundation. The newly built palace faithfully recreates the historical exterior, while its interior is distinctly modern, housing a museum and versatile event spaces that seamlessly combine heritage with contemporary design.
Surrounding the palace are the renowned Herrenhausen Gardens, among the most important and best-preserved Baroque gardens in Europe. Located in the Herrenhausen district, just a few kilometers from Hannover’s city center (Herrenhäuser Straße 4, 30419 Hannover, Germany), the gardens date back to the 17th century and were developed by the royal House of Hannover as a symbol of elegance, artistic vision, and control over nature.
The complex includes several distinct garden areas, most notably the Great Garden (Großer Garten), known for its precise geometric layout, ornamental fountains, and sculptures, as well as the Berggarten, which showcases botanical collections and rare plant species from around the world. One of the most impressive features is the Great Fountain, reaching heights of up to 80 meters, making it one of the tallest garden fountains in Europe. Originally created in the 18th century, it represented both technological innovation and the wealth of the Hanoverian court.
Today, the gardens and palace together form a vibrant cultural site, hosting festivals, concerts, exhibitions, and international events throughout the year.
